20 Races for 2009 F1 season

That’s the plan from F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone. Speaking after the press conference announcing the inclusion of the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix for seven years starting in 2009.

Ecclestone has long been a supporter of more events to make up an F1 season at the expense of testing which from his point of view is just cars running around in front of empty grandstands. The teams themselves have argued for years that more events would mean more expense, this is seen as a very poor argument as most teams send the same quantities of staff and equipment to the tests as would be fielded at a GP weekend.

The increase of GP’s for the season is becoming a necessary if some of the traditional circuits are to be retained under the onslaught from new players like cash rich Abu Dhabi.

In the end this increase can only be a positive for us fans.
