Mercedes’ Norbert Haug has declined to weigh into discussions about which teams will start the 2007 season as favourites to win the title.
Despite the McLaren collaboration failing to win a single grand prix last year, Mercedes’ competition chief said it is too early to conclude that Renault and Ferrari will again be the outfits to beat when the season kicks off in March.
“No one knows who the favourite is at the moment,” the German said in an interview with Germany’s Sport1 website.
“Not the bosses nor an observer standing on the outside.”
Haug insisted that there is still plenty of testing to be done prior to the first race of 2007 in Melbourne, not to mention the unveiling of the new cars.
He also pointed out that Ferrari had the best car at the end of last year, despite struggling to compete in ’05.
McLaren-Mercedes’ Haug concluded: “And we did the same in 2005, when we were also not favourites.”
