Column Ialdo Belo – Boring?

Mon, 13 July 2015, 08:37

We are seeing nowadays in the media people complaining about the monotony of F1 this season because of the dominance of the Mercedes. Well, since F1 is F1 that has always existed, but people seem to have a tendency to forget that, then, let’s see.
At the beginning of the category, in the 1950s, a name almost absolutely dominated the sport: Juan Manuel Fangio. The Argentine, from 1950 to 1957, was five times world champion and twice vice champion.
In the 70s, Lotus and Tyrrell and then Lotus, Ferrari and McLaren did not give room for other teams.
In 1988, McLaren won with Senna and Prost, fifteen of the sixteen races and not only won all because Senna, leader, was hit by Jean-Louis Schlesser on the penultimate lap of the Italian Grand Prix and had to abandon the race.
In the 90s, Williams, Benetton and McLaren also dominated in different years.
From 2000 to 2004, the Ferrari with Michael Schumacher, had no opponents.
In 2005 and 2006 it was the turn of Renault.
Finally, from 2010 to 2013, the Red Bull reigned absolute in the tracks with Sebastian Vettel.
If there was a balance in F1 this was during the 60’s, but most people who call the category of “boring” today was not even born at the time.
What people do not seem to realize is that the “domain” of a team in F1 is seasonal and today’s winner will be the big loser of tomorrow. It has always existed and always will exist.
Today, Mercedes dominates, but as early as next year, we could see even the McLaren-Honda imposing their opponents and winning everything and, for those who find it impossible I’ll give just one example: Brawn GP.
It’s annoying to see the Mercedes Hamilton and Rosberg dominate? It IS.
But those who think this is not normal, do not know the F1.
