Spyker needs the cash

The recently acquired and renamed Spyker MF1 team has declined to confirm reports that a pay-driver is likely to be signed to be Christijan Albers’ teammate in 2007.

Silverstone based Spyker announced last week that Dutchman Albers would drive one of next year’s orange cars, amid speculation that – without a title sponsor – the Dutch team can not afford to pay a retainer to the occupant of the second seat.

”At present we are looking at all the various options for 2007,” a Spyker-MF1 spokeswoman said on Thursday, ”and therefore are unable to confirm this.”

Among the leading candidates for the drive are Red Bull refugee Christian Klien, and Albers’ current teammate Tiago Monteiro.

Team boss Colin Kolles said: ”Tiago is one of the many options that we have.

”We will make a decision. Tiago has been doing a good job for two years and we will see.”
