Max Mosley threatened to strip drivers of their F1 superlicenses after criticising Monza’s safety standards, according to David Coulthard.
A row with the governing body erupted at the Italian grand prix last month, when the ‘Grand Prix Drivers’ Association’ (GPDA) threatened to boycott the high speed circuit because pleas for better safety were allegedly being ignored.
“Instead of real answers we got a letter from Max saying we were speaking out of turn,” former GPDA chairman Coulthard, referring to the president of the FIA, told the British monthly magazine F1 Racing.
The Scot, 35, added: “(The letter said) that the terms of our superlicenses include a clause that says we aren’t allowed to speak out of turn or against the governing body, etc.”
But Red Bull racer Coulthard insisted that drivers are ‘not intimidated’ by the warning.
“It’s still us, and only us – the drivers – who really know what it’s like to follow another car through a wall of spray at somewhere like Spa,” he said.
“I’m all for everyone involved in the sport expressing their views; why, then, must we drivers not express ours?”
