Jun.29 (GMM) Carlos Sainz has piled further pressure on Williams after another frustrating weekend in Austria, amid continuing speculation he could look elsewhere for 2027 if the team fails to improve.
The Spaniard retired with an electrical failure on Sunday, despite enjoying “much better pace” compared to earlier in the weekend.
Williams is expected to introduce major upgrades at Silverstone, but Sainz made it clear they cannot arrive soon enough.
When asked if he’s feeling positive about an improved car, he answered: “Let’s not kid ourselves, positive within the context of our current performance, which is very poor,” he said.
“Positive because at least I got back to where I was in Barcelona and the previous races, where at least I was comfortable with the limited performance we have, at least I’m relieved about that.”
“But I hope this is the last of these really bad weekends, because we’ve had everything, because in the end there’s no reliability, no pace, and no car capable of scoring points.
“So we have to wait and see if things improve at Silverstone.”
“Despite all the negativity surrounding this start to the season, I’m feeling a bit more positive today. But we need to change things and improve.”
Meanwhile, fellow Spaniard Fernando Alonso also indicated Aston Martin’s long-awaited major upgrade is still some way off.
After another difficult race, Alonso said he expects little improvement over the next two rounds. “Disappointed?” he said when addressed by reporters.
“Well, it wasn’t unexpected. Obviously, we know where we stand.
“And we know it’s going to be the same at Silverstone and Spa.”
His comments suggest Aston Martin’s major Newey-led package is now likely to arrive for the Hungarian GP at the end of July.
