Fernando Alonso celebrated with a sort of monkey-dance after becoming the first ever Spaniard to win the Spanish grand prix.
The Renault driver, who stretched his championship lead back to 15 points over Michael Schumacher, won by a commanding 19 seconds despite saying on the grid that Ferrari appeared ‘impossible to beat’.
”Hopefully my home crowd can give me something extra I need to win,” the 24-year-old said.
Renault’s Giancarlo Fisichella finished third, after seeming to help teammate Alonso – the first major player to pit on Sunday afternoon – to build an early lead over his red chaser.
