Monteiro doubts Alonso quit reports

Tiago Monteiro has dismissed reports that quoted Fernando Alonso as vowing to quit formula one with his third title.

“I don’t believe that he said that,” the Portuguese racer told sports newspaper ‘O Jogo’.

“Perhaps the quotes were badly translated, because it did not seem like his style.”

30-year-old Monteiro also described the 2006 season finale in Brazil as ‘strange’, due to the unusual behaviour of championship protagonists Michael Schumacher and Alonso.

“They spent all their time locked up in their rooms and their hotels,” he revealed.

Monteiro has recently been quoted as promising a new Spyker contract for himself in 2007 ‘very soon’, and he insisted to O Jogo that everything is still on track.

But he cautioned: “In F1 things can change at any moment because there are so many drivers who want my seat.

“However, at this moment, the team are giving their priority to me.”

The identity of Christijan Albers’ teammate for 2007 is expected to be revealed before Christmas.
