Alonso comments on Renault ‘rumours’

Fernando Alonso has finally commented on niggling rumours that he and manager Flavio Briatore could be plotting a course away from McLaren for the 2007 season.

The Spaniard has already penned a deal to leave Renault at the end of the year, but he may be hesitant about the struggle of its silver rival so far in ’06.

Referring to the origins of the press speculation, 24-year-old Alonso told ‘Kicker’: ”The French always enjoy their rumours.”

The fact that Fernando is at least due to leave Renault, however, could affect the outcome of the world championship fight, according to notable grand prix observer Niki Lauda.

Former triple world champion Lauda points out that while the mutual loyalty between Alonso and his Renault team might be questionable, Michael Schumacher is unlikely to suffer the same side-effects at Ferrari.

”So he gets total support,” said the Austrian, adding that uncertainty about Schumacher’s future could work in his favour because Ferrari are keen to keep hold of him.gmmf1 dailyf1news.com
