Alonso dislikes new Barcelona chicane

F1’s reigning world champion has joined a growing list of drivers who don’t like the new section at the end of the Circuit de Catalunya.

The chicane means that the Barcelona layout no longer ends with two fast right-hand sweepers, leading some racers to herald the improvement in safety.

“I don’t like it much,” the 25-year-old Spaniard stated plainly during testing on Wednesday, adding that he disagrees with those who think it will provide a better overtaking opportunity under brakes for turn one.

“I really liked the two final corners here and I will miss them, but hopefully the chicane will give us some good moments during the races.”

Alonso’s McLaren teammate and countryman Pedro de la Rosa, however, told reporters that he is sure the new solution is better for overtaking than the previous fast sweepers.

“A couple of times this week I was able to get really close to the back of a car in that section without any problems,” said the team’s Spanish test driver.

He added: “From a drivers point of view you want to be fast all the time but you also have to think about the spectators.”
