Reigning champion and 2006 title leader Fernando Alonso has been named the ‘Favourite Son’ of his local Spanish region, Oviedo.

Reports in the country quoted the 24-year-old Renault race driver, who today lives in England but says ‘all my family and friends’ still live in the city, as describing ‘great pride’ at the new honour.

Alonso accepted the prize from major Gabino de Lorenzo, saying: ”I hope everyone is as proud of my races and championships as I am of this precious city.”

The mayor added: ”(Alonso) is an example of how it is possible to reach the most difficult objectives with intelligence, tenacity and faith in success.” gmmf1dailyf1news.com
