Alonso leaves teammate decision to McLaren

Fernando Alonso has refused to weigh in with his opinion about who should partner him in the sister McLaren in 2007.

Test driver and incumbent Pedro de la Rosa is to compete for the drive this winter against young GP2 champion Lewis Hamilton, but double world champion Alonso put his faith in Ron Dennis’ Mercedes-powered team to make the right call.

“Pedro is a great driver, a good friend and also Spanish, but all these things do not count,” he told the mass circulation Spanish newspaper El Pais.

Alonso, 25, confessed that he does not know much about Hamilton, who is a long time protege of team boss Dennis.

“He had a great season in GP2, but I do not know him as a formula one driver. McLaren will know who is the better choice for the team.”
