1’s reigning back to back world champion will be nominated for the Laureus World Sport Awards, according to reports in the Spanish press.

The 25-year-old Spaniard was pipped to the prestigious international sportsman of the year title last year by tennis’ Roger Federer, but alongside Ronaldinho, Tiger Woods and Zinedine Zidane he is set to get another shot in 2007.

The official list of nominees – compiled after a secret ballot of hundreds of journalists – will be announced next Tuesday, before the winner is crowned at a ceremony in Barcelona in early April.

Renault won Laureus’ team prize in 2006, before Alonso switched to the McLaren camp.

Should Alonso win, he would be the first grand prix driver to do so since Michael Schumacher took the honour in 2002 and 2004. He would also be the first winning Spaniard.

Juan Pablo Montoya won a rookie’s award in 2002.
