F1’s world champion has been beaten to a ‘European sportsman of the year’ plaudit.

Tennis’ Roger Federer is more deserving of the title than back to back drivers’ world championship winner Fernando Alonso, according to the Polish press agency Polska Agencja Prasowa.

‘PAP’ determined the recipient of the award through an enquiry of 16 fellow European press agencies.

Alonso netted 75 votes to world number one Federer’s 145.
