French sports newspaper L’Equipe has found that two sportsmen are more deserving of the ‘Champion of Champions’ title than Fernando Alonso for the year 2006.

More than 200 of the newspaper’s journalists – including its magazine, television and internet editions – voted that tennis’ Roger Federer deserved the honour most of all.

The Swiss also won the title in 2005.

Also attracting more votes than Alonso, the winner of seven grands prix last year and a second consecutive drivers’ championship, was American golfer Tiger Woods.

Spaniard Alonso, 25, also ranked third on L’Equipe’s ‘Champion of Champions’ list in 2005.
