Ammermuller set for Red Bull drive

The news is not yet official, but Michael Ammermuller has been granted a mandatory Super License and will become Red Bull’s ‘Friday’ driver for the rest of this season.

The German 20-year-old is set to make his free practice debut in China this weekend, as former third driver Robert Doornbos replaces Christian Klien in the racing role.

Ammermuller, who recently tested for Red Bull at Jerez and reportedly boarded a plane to Shanghai on Monday, drove in 2006 for team principal Christian Horner’s GP2 team.

Doornbos, meanwhile, admitted that following his three races in China, Japan and Brazil, a return to the test bench is most likely.

The Dutchman admitted to F1’s official website: ”We have an offer from Red Bull to stay on next year as a test driver.

”Maybe a combined role of testing and racing somewhere else would be a good option as well.”
