Anyone can drive for McLaren

Mercedes’ Norbert Haug has rejected suggestions that McLaren is not likely to hire Pedro de la Rosa for the 2007 season because he is Spanish.

Spaniard Fernando Alonso has already signed for the Anglo-German squad, which – according to some – is another boost to the prospects of Briton Lewis Hamilton simply due to his different nationality.

But Mercedes’ competition director Haug told Sport-Informations-Dienst: ”Speed is more important to us than where someone is from.”

De la Rosa, meanwhile, said in Shanghai that the only satisfying requisite for any racer who replaces him in the silver cockpit next year is that ‘he is quicker’.
