Bahrain denies season open date for 2008

Organisers of the Bahrain grand prix have refused to confirm reports that it will host the first race of the 2008 calendar.

Melbourne promoter the AGPC revealed this week that it had relinquished the role as F1’s season opener to Bahrain after refusing to stage night races.

Bahrain usually hosts the third race of the season, except in 2006 when an impressive television audience tuned in for the Bahrain season opener while the Commonwealth Games took place in Australia.

The Sakhir circuit’s general manager Martin Whitaker refused to confirm the Australian reports.

“Until such time as the official 2008 FIA formula one world championship calendar is announced any speculation about the date of next year’s (Bahrain) grand prix has to be discounted,” he said.

Bahrain earlier this year secured a contract to stage the race until deep into the next decade.
