Berger denies pay-driver plan

Toro Rosso co-owner Gerhard Berger has rubbished suggestions that he is pushing to install a pay-driver at the team in 2007.

The Faenza squad is the only team yet to announce its race lineup for the 2007 season, amid speculation that Scott Speed and Vitantonio Liuzzi could be dropped.

Spyker refugee Tiago Monteiro is strongly linked with one of the seats, after a reported deadline for Toro Rosso’s driver decision came and went in the last days of 2006.

According to former grand prix winner Berger, however, Speed and Liuzzi are still in “pole position” for the drives.

“We just had to sort out other things,” he said, possibly referring to recent rumours of last minute meetings of team management in Tyrol.
