Peter Sauber thinks a bigger budget was the only missing link at his Hinwil based team before it was bought by BMW.
Historically an independent midfield regular, Sauber – now renamed BMW-Sauber – emerged as the third strongest force in 2007 at the recent Australian season opener.
Team founder Peter Sauber is now a consultant for the Swiss-German team, and he told his column for the newspaper Blick: “During our years as a private team our resources were limited.
“Our budget did not permit the jump to the very front.
“But I was always convinced of the potential of our guys and now they are proving it,” Sauber said.
BMW-Sauber has signed big names including Willem Toet and Jorg Zander, but Peter Sauber said most workers at the Hinwil base are still the same.
Sauber will attend next weekend’s Malaysian GP.
