BMW may win races in 2007 – Berger

BMW is on the verge of driving into F1’s victory lane as a works competitor, according to Gerhard Berger.

Prior to buying a half-share in Toro Rosso, the 47-year-old Austrian worked alongside BMW’s Mario Theissen as motor sport director in the Williams era.

In Berger’s absence, the German carmaker bought Sauber and had an impressive debut season in 2006. With its new F1.07, BMW is currently enjoying an even more impressive winter.

“BMW seems very well prepared,” Berger admitted to Kicker magazine.

“This season I can see them annoying the big guys here and there and even winning a race.”

Berger, meanwhile, agreed that his old team McLaren’s new MP4-22 racer seems “very strong” and is probably the favourite for the title.

He also spent time in Ferrari cockpits during his racing career, and said: “Raikkonen and Massa seem to be a little bit behind, but perhaps Ferrari hasn’t shown everything they have yet.”
