Nick Heidfeld says BMW-Sauber’s rivals are using the Hinwil based team’s strong winter showing to take pressure off themselves.
BMW is clearly enjoying a competitive pre-season, but German Heidfeld, 29, cast doubt on Ferrari racer Felipe Massa’s recent claim that the Munich manufacturer could be set to contend the 2007 title.
“Comments like those are on the one hand nice to hear,” Heidfeld, also referring to other rivals’ statements, told adrivo.com, “but on the other hand it could be seen as a bit exaggerated.
“Maybe it is to take a bit of the pressure away from them being in the favourite role.”
He nonetheless confessed that BMW’s new ‘F1.07’ is progressing nicely on the winter tracks.
Heidfeld said: “We are looking good in terms of our speed, but we are not going to win the world championship. That is not our realistic goal for this year.”
