Dieter Zetsche has urged McLaren-Mercedes to go two better in 2007.

The CEO of Mercedes’ parent company, DaimlerChrysler, rued the silver collaboration’s distant third place in the recently concluded formula one constructors’ title.

“Quite simply, Mercedes must be in front,” he was quoted as saying by Sport-Informations-Dienst at the traditional Stars & Cars event in Stuttgart.

Zetsche added on Saturday: “I will only be content if we are two places better in 2007.”

50,000 spectators attended the event, at which the Ferrari-bound Kimi Raikkonen appeared for the last time. By competition chief Norbert Haug, he was presented a motocross helmet in his distinct design.

The Finn said: “I am a little bit sad. I had a good five years with this team.”

His countryman Mika Hakkinen was also in attendance, and he indicated that a new contract with the marque in the DTM touring car series was likely.

But Hakkinen warned: “We are still working on it.”
