Mario Almondo is the departing Ross Brawn’s successor as technical director, but Luca Baldisseri will become the new brain on the Ferrari pit wall, according to reports.

The German magazine Auto Motor und Sport said that chief engineer Baldisseri, 44, will from 2007 take on Brawn’s lauded responsibility for devising race tactics and pit stop strategies.

He will also be in charge of car setup and tyre choice at grands prix.

Brawn denied that his boots are too big to fill, and rejected apparent internal criticism that Baldisseri is ‘too nice’ to execute a top job.

Referring to Baldisseri, he said: “He will of course do things differently to me, but he will do a good job.”
