Flavio Briatore has scoffed at reports that he is preparing to bid for Italian football club Parma.

Parma FC’s bankrupt owner, food company Parmalat, said this week that it was trying to sell the club.

Interested parties have until January 8 – Monday – to make “non-binding bids”, the financial news service Bloomberg reported.

La Gazzetta dello Sport published Renault chief Briatore, 56, as saying in a statement: “Following reports in the press about my interest in contributing to the acquisition of Parma, I want to make it absolutely clear that it is false.

“I do not intend to acquire Parma and such a project does not figure in my plans either for now or in the future.”
