F1 driver Jenson Button has failed to win the BBC’s coveted British sports personality of the year award, despite being nominated.

Equestrian star Zara Phillips, the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, took the plaudits on Sunday, with golfer Darren Clarke and gymnast Beth Tweddle in second and third.

The recipient of the annual award is determined with a public vote.
