The general manager of Shanghai’s formula one circuit has been implicated in a major Chinese corruption scandal.

A report by the state-run ‘Shanghai Securities News’ said on Wednesday that Yu Zhifei, who was instrumental in bringing the sport to China, is currently ‘aiding authorities’ in their probe investigations.

Unnamed sources said Zhifei’s alleged involvement relates to ‘illegal operations’ at the Shanghai International Circuit, and connected him with the scandal that led to the demise of a prominent Communist Party politician last month.

American news agency Associated Press said the circuit’s spokesman was not at work on Wednesday, and other staff had not been given permission to comment.
