Crash makes Alonso cautious – ‘insider’

Interlagos is one of Fernando Alonso’s least favourite circuits, according to an ‘insider’ at the Renault team.

Although the Spaniard wrapped up his maiden drivers’ title in Sao Paulo a year ago, he only finished third. The 25-year-old, moreover, has never won the Brazilian grand prix.

The ‘insider’ told German daily Bild-Zeitung that Alonso, who only needs to finish eighth on Sunday to secure his second championship, has been cautious on the ‘Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace’ layout ever since his horror crash in 2003.

Bringing an end to the race, the then 22-year-old hit debris from an earlier crash at unabated speed on the pit straight, and spent the next 14 hours under observation in hospital.

“It was Fernando’s biggest crash,” the insider said. “Since then he has always driven more reservedly in Brazil.”
