Dernie joins Toyota as advisor

Frank Dernie has become a ‘senior advisor’ for Toyota, the Japanese formula one team announced on Wednesday.

The veteran Briton, who is a contemporary of Sir Frank Williams and a stalwart of the Grove based team for decades, left the paddock at the end of 2006 following a stint as consultant engineer.

He will now “advise (Toyota) on aerodynamic and chassis-related matters, although he will not have a factory-based role and is not expected to attend races frequently”, Toyota – who currently supply engines to Williams – said.

A statement also explained that the role will enable Dernie “to continue with other commitments” away from F1, such as being a member of the Powerboat P1 category’s Technical Compliance Committee.

“He has a tremendous amount of experience in formula one and, as we are a relatively young team, this will help us move closer to our goals,” Toyota’s executive vice president Yoshiaki Kinoshita said.
