Champ Car team Minardi has finally satisfied lengthy speculation that Dutch driver Robert Doornbos will race in the American series next year.

Minardi, run by ex-grand prix team owner and Doornbos’ former F1 boss Paul Stoddart, announced on Wednesday that the 25-year-old has signed a contract to join the Indianapolis-based squad in 2007.

The Minardi statement clarified that Doornbos will combine his new racing role “with testing commitments for the Red Bull Racing F1 team”.

The Champ Car season kicks off in Las Vegas next week.

Doornbos raced in F1 for Minardi in 2005.

He said: “It’s obviously a different team from the one I last drove for, in formula one, but there is still the same, close-knit, family feeling about it that I like.”
