Ex-Montoya trainer to work with Alonso

World champion Fernando Alonso, who is switching from Renault to McLaren, will work with a new fitness trainer in 2007 and beyond.

At Renault, the Spaniard worked with Edoardo Bendinelli, but a Spanish newspaper reports that Alonso’s new trainer for his McLaren tenure will be Gerry Convey.

Convey, who formerly worked with Juan Pablo Montoya and Pedro de la Rosa at the Woking based team, is perhaps best known for his involvement in the now Nascar-bound Colombian’s notorious ‘tennis’ injury last year.

According to the pair, Montoya fractured his shoulder in early 2005 whilst playing tennis with Convey, but rumours at the time insisted that the story was a cover for a motorbike crash.

Convey is also credited with helping Montoya to lose weight prior to the start of his two-season McLaren tenure.

Spanish sports daily El Mundo Deportivo says Alonso, 25, and Convey – an ex-marine – will start working together in January.

Reportedly, Convey will move closer to Alonso’s home and double as his assistant at grands prix.
