F1 looks to Greece

If Bernie Ecclestone has his way (and he often does), the site of the 2004 Olympic basketball, baseball and kayak events will become a Formula 1 racing complex.

The F1 boss met with Greek officials over the weekend and told them the Hellinikon Olympic Complex, a former airport, would be the perfect place to stage an F1 race. Organisers say they would use the grandstand structure as part of any race circuit.

Ecclestone said that the site would be favoured by F1 officials rather than another proposed venue, located some 80 km away from Athens.

Local developers had contemplated turning the Hellinikon site into a racing circuit but Greek government officials indicated the complex would likely be turned into a public park.
