FIA approves Singapore street circuit

F1’s governing body has signalled a green light to the inaugural Singapore grand prix next year.

The Paris based FIA has given in-principle approval to the city-state’s street circuit, but Singapore officials are still waiting to hear if the race can be held under lights, the news agency Channel NewsAsia reported on Friday.

Work at the site, including the construction of pit and paddock buildings, will begin imminently.

“We have refined the proposed street circuit and submitted the plans to the FIA for its assessment and endorsement,” the Singapore Tourism Board’s Lim Neo Chian said last month.

The race’s communications director Jonathan Hallett, meanwhile, said in July: “We will carry out a night race only if the FIA and Formula One Administration find that the safety of drivers and spectators is not compromised.”
