Final approval for night race still pending

Final approval for F1’s first ever night race in Singapore next year is still yet to be given, a spokesperson for the race promoter confirmed on Tuesday.

The governing body’s FIA World Motor Sport Council met in Paris last week and gave in-principle approval for the unique event, which should see the streets around the city-state’s downtown Marina area floodlit next September.

A contractor to supply the bespoke lighting system has been selected, and successful night tests have been staged at Bernie Ecclestone’s Paul Ricard circuit in France.

But when asked if the night event was still subject to final safety approval, a spokesperson for the Singapore Motor Sports Council on Tuesday said: “That is the case.”

Singapore Tourism Board chief executive Lim Neo Chian confirmed in a statement: “Subject to final safety approvals, formula one fans worldwide will be able to enjoy a race experience like no other in Singapore from next year — a dramatic night street race set against our beautiful city skyline.”
