Giancarlo Fisichella has warned Nelson Piquet Jr to sit tight after the 2007 Renault test driver said he was anticipating the Roman’s retirement from F1.
21-year-old Piquet commented this week: “Fisichella may retire in 2008 and if everything goes right, I should replace him.”
But Fisichella, who in January will turn thirty four but is still younger than a handful of current F1 rivals, told reporters at Interlagos that he was not planning to hang up his helmet any time soon.
Referring to Brazilian Piquet, he said: “If he is waiting for me to retire then I think he will only be an F1 driver in six or seven years.
“I want to renew my deal here and I would like to work with Renault for a few more years.”
Fisichella signed a contract in June to race for Renault for a third consecutive season in 2007.
