Giancarlo Fisichella says he will be among the top challengers for the world championship next year.

The veteran Roman, who was title winner Fernando Alonso’s teammate in 2005 and 2006, is to be partnered at the Renault squad next year by Finnish rookie Heikki Kovalainen.

“I’m confident of winning the world championship,” he told the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I will be a main player along with Raikkonen and Alonso.”

33-year-old Fisichella is confident that the departure of Alonso to McLaren could be to his benefit.

He added: “I’m aware that next year I will have at my disposal a great car and a great team, who I’ve already worked with for two years so I know them well.”
