Renault usually concentrates its championship effort on “one driver”, Giancarlo Fisichella says.
In ’05 and ’06, the Roman’s teammate Fernando Alonso captured the drivers’ crowns for Renault, but 34-year-old Fisichella hopes that this season, he will enjoy the French squad’s full focus.
Fisichella confirmed that the Spaniard, who has switched to McLaren for 2007, was Renault’s “chosen one” in the past.
“The strategy worked,” he said in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Alonso’s successor is the rookie Finn Heikki Kovalainen.
Fisichella continued: “After three or four races (in 2007), if one of us is in a better position than the other, Renault will decide (which driver to concentrate on).”
Fisichella admitted recently that Renault’s new R27 is not quite on the pace of main rivals including Ferrari and McLaren.
