Fuji, Suzuka, to share Japanese GP from 2009

The Japanese grand prix will from 2009 onwards alternate between Fuji and the event’s popular former venue, Suzuka.

The redeveloped Fuji circuit, set to host formula one for the first time later this month, revealed the news in a statement on Saturday.

It said Fuji president Hiroaki Kato and Bernie Ecclestone reached the agreement following the F1 chief executive’s suggestion that it “would be a good strategy not only welcomed by Japanese fans, but fans all over the world”.

It was reported earlier this year that Ecclestone was working on the deal following his realisation of the true popularity of the figure-of-eight Suzuka layout and also pressure from its owner, the Honda Motor Co.

Ecclestone criticised Suzuka’s ageing facilities before axing it for 2007, much to Toyota’s delight after the carmaker refurbished the Fuji Speedway at considerable cost.
