Hamilton backs GP-debut delay

Lewis Hamilton has backed McLaren’s decision to block his formula one debut until at least 2007.

The 21-year-old newly crowned GP2 champion was tipped to take Pedro de la Rosa’s seat in Brazil this weekend, but Hamilton says he agrees with boss Ron Dennis who thinks he is not ideally prepared for the risk of an early start.

“I do feel I am ready,” the Briton told the Daily Mail, “but formula one is the pinnacle of motor sport, not something you just jump in and do.

“I could have gone (to Brazil) and experienced a disaster.”

One such ‘disaster’, for example, could be rain, because Hamilton’s mere four days of formula one testing were all in the dry.
