Lewis Hamilton escaped uninjured on Thursday after the biggest crash of his formula one career.

On his thirty-third lap on day two of McLaren’s exclusive test at cold Valencia, the British rookie destroyed the rear of his new MP4-22 when he struck a tyre barrier at nearly full speed at 2pm, according to press sources in Spain.

Photographs of the silver racer, which is too damaged to be repaired on site, are not available as the Woking based team is conducting a closed test.

World champion Fernando Alonso will complete the test alone on Friday.

“The cause of the accident is being investigated,” said a spokesperson for McLaren.
