Hamilton ready for McLaren – de Ferran

Gil de Ferran has backed McLaren’s decision to race GP2 champion Lewis Hamilton alongside Fernando Alonso in 2007.

The Brazilian, a former Indy 500 winner and F1 team Honda’s sporting director, said he watched the 21-year-old rookie from the side of Spanish tracks during the pre-Christmas test period.

39-year-old de Ferran, who rose through the European junior categories but never appeared in grand prix racing, contradicted suggestions that Hamilton might not be ready to drive for a top team in formula one.

“He looked ready to me,” Gil told the London based Daily Telegraph.

“Very organised, few mistakes. If Ron (Dennis) had offered me a drive at 21, I’d have taken it.”
