With the help of more than 2000 tungsten spikes embedded in his Bridgestones, Nick Heidfeld on Sunday slipped and slid his 2006 BMW-Sauber across a frozen lake.
The German driver and his formula one car were star attractions at the White Turf horse racing event in Switzerland, which is celebrating its 100th birthday.
“(Technicians) also had to warm up the engine every half hour to keep it from freezing,” read a statement, explaining that the event is jointly sponsored by Credit Suisse and BMW.
Despite the snow and ice, video footage showed Heidfeld clocking up impressive speeds on the spectator-lined track, with beautiful snow-peaked mountains as a backdrop.
