Nick Heidfeld is the first of this season’s formula one drivers to touch down in Australia.

Nearly two full weeks ahead of the 2007 season opener in Melbourne, BMW’s Swiss based German racer said he decided to make the early trip primarily to adjust to the time and climate difference.

With partner Patricia and their daughter Juni, Heidfeld, 29, travelled directly from the Bahrain test to Australia’s biggest city Sydney, according to the Cologne newspaper ‘Express’.

“First we are visiting a few friends and we want to have a look around the city,” he said, “but what I really want to do is get used to the time difference and the weather.”

With a career at Prost, Sauber, Jordan and Williams behind him, it is possible that Heidfeld has decided to attack 2007 with a renewed vigour.

Team boss Mario Theissen observed: “Nick is certainly standing before the high point of his career.”
