Jan.5 (GMM) Nick Heidfeld has been offered the role as test and reserve driver for Mercedes GP in 2010, Germany’s Bild reports.

The major daily newspaper said the move would complete what it describes as F1’s new ‘German national team’, with compatriots Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg signed up to fill the race cockpits this season.

Heidfeld, 32, has raced continuously in F1 since 2000, but after the last four years with BMW-Sauber he had hoped to secure the race seat alongside Rosberg prior to Schumacher’s decision to return.

Renault remains a possibility for the veteran of 169 grands prix, while Sauber is believed to have selected between Pedro de la Rosa, Giancarlo Fisichella and Christian Klien for the vacant seat alongside Kamui Kobayashi.

Apart from Renault and Sauber, the only other unconfirmed seats for 2010 are with Toro Rosso, Campos and USF1.
