After just missing the podium in Melbourne, Nick Heidfeld urged his BMW paymasters to sign him up for the 2008 season.
The 29-year-old German inked a three year deal with the Swiss based squad after leaving Williams at the end of 2005, but the final year of the contract – next season – is an ‘option’ that still requires the consent of BMW.
Heidfeld is under pressure for the seat from BMW’s teenaged Friday driver Sebastian Vettel, with his current teammate Robert Kubica already singled out as a star of the future.
“It would be too early to leave the team (at the end of the year),” Heidfeld told Abendzeitung, a German newspaper.
He added: “The current structure is running perfectly and everything goes in the right direction, so why not (stay for another year?)”
