In the Cockpit with DJ Samson

Hello Formula One fans! The last few months have been very busy for me and my racing career. If you didn’t read my inaugural DailyF1News.com article in January, I will give you a quick update on my self. I’m a 14 year old American go-kart racer. I’m under funded, yet very determined.

Back in January my plan was to take a charge on the Skip Barber National Championship. Then I would proceed to Formula Renault EuroCup the following year. My plans were sidelined due to the lack of funding. I didn’t have the funds to compete in the Skip Barber National Race Series. It’s approximately $47,000 to compete; excluding travel and food charges.

For a while I was very down. My entire racing career was sitting on my determination, not my wallet. I had to figure out a way to get funding to race. I interviewed a few motorsports marketing companies but the costs to get started were unbearable.

I then received an offer from a UK go-kart team. Later there were unhidden clauses that forced me to stay in their ‘path’ of racing rather then going through my path. It seemed like every day was packed full of ‘ups’ and ‘downs.’

This brings me to my present. The Skip Barber Nationals have already kicked off at Laguna Seca a few days ago. Even if I were to receive the necessary funding tomorrow, I would be so far behind in the points it would be impossible to catch up. My ‘game plan’ from here is to aim at the Skip Barber East Series Championship. The series opener is on May 5th. This leaves me less than two months to acquire sponsorship and pass the necessary schools to be eligible to compete.

I’m currently working on a unique proposal. The idea of the proposal is to offer the potential sponsor a long term agreement through Skip Barber, Formula Renault, F3, GP2 and eventually, Formula One. This program also offers all marketing partners a share of the profits. This leaves each sponsor making more money than they invested into me racing career. If you’d like to see the proposal, feel free to e-mail me.

On top of everything I am once again talking to a few marketing companies. Hopefully I can find a cost efficient yet successful marketing firm.

Unfortunately I do not have parents who can fund my racing dreams. Although this is discouraging, I believe determination and talent will prevail.
