Michael Schumacher’s home town of Kerpen, located near Cologne in western Germany, has rejected a proposal to formally honour the retired multiple world champion.

The newspaper ‘Express’ reports that, although less than a week ago Maranello in Italy conferred an honorary citizenship on the 37-year-old for his service to Ferrari, Kerpen mayor Marlies Sieburg rejected the proposal of Schumacher’s Kerpen fan club.

An official said: “The honour should be given to someone who worked for years and even decades for the benefit of Kerpen in the city itself.”

Despite missing the official honour, Schumacher is the only living citizen of Kerpen to have a street named after him.
