M. Schumacher feared death at Stowe ’99

Seven time world champion Michael Schumacher has admitted for the first time that he thought he was going to die following his crash in the 1999 British grand prix.

The German, who announced his retirement from formula one in September, missed several races after breaking his leg and badly cutting his heel in the flat out shunt at Silverstone’s Stowe corner.

But in a magazine supplement for the newspaper ‘Suddeutsche Zeitung’, 37-year-old Schumacher revealed the grave truth about what happened beyond the sight of the TV cameras.

“I was laying there and I could hear my heart beat becoming quieter and quieter and quieter,” he said.

“Then everything around me went dark — in that moment I was scared,” Schumacher continued. “I remember thinking, ‘This is it for me’.”
