Alex Zanardi has given Michael Schumacher a pat on the back for quitting F1 after an illustrious 16-year career.

The Italian, who left the pinnacle of motor sport in 1999 but later lost his legs in an horror Champ Car shunt, says F1’s only seven time world champion picked the right time to call it a day.

“Even with his retirement Michael proved that he has a knack for making the right decision at the right time,” Zanardi, 40, told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

He said German Schumacher is presently the only grand prix super-talent who is enjoying “peaceful” winter nights.

“Now he has his fun on the kart tracks, without all the pressure,” Zanardi added.
