Max Verstappen gave himself the perfect birthday present by passing his driving test. A year ago, the Dutch youngster got his FIA Super License, which enables him to partake in Grand Prix weekends. Now, with his driving test passed, he can take to the open road.

“It’s great to be eighteen and to have a driving license”, says Max to Verstappen.nl. “That I’m finally allowed on the road on my own gives me more independence, which is great! I have to say it’s a relief to pass the test. I was a bit nervous to make mistakes, but the exam went well.”

Back in January, Max passed his driving theory test which meant, as the Dutchman lives in Belgium, he could drive a car under supervision in Belgium. Today, Max had to do it all on his own, with just the examiner next to him. The youngest ever Formula 1 driver passed all the challenges the test threw at him, despite having had his first driving lesson last Monday and spending less than five hours with an instructor.

Max prefers being a passenger in a road car as opposed to driving himself. “It’s a moment of peace and I still think that way. However, if I want to go somewhere on my own, at least now I’m able to jump in my Renault Clio RS and go. That sense of liberty feels great.”

As a driving license is now a requirement to be a Formula 1 driver, Max is keen to be a gentleman on public roads. “Don’t worry, I’ll stick to the rules”, concludes Max before attacking a piece of cake to celebrate.
